Ear Foundation training day at our Family Centre

On 5 March 2019, we are hosting The Ear Foundation’s training day about assessing and developing narrative (story-telling) skills for deaf children aged 2-8 years.

“Let me tell you” – a one day course by The Ear Foundation

This one day training course is intended for anyone who develops and monitors the language development of children aged 2 – 8 (or older if delayed). The course is provided by speech and language therapists Lyndsey Allen and Di Harbor, who offer the following introduction to the course:

“Children like stories, we all like stories. It is how we construct and make sense of events in our lives and how we like to be entertained through books and films. Telling a coherent story requires complex language skills and the ability to perspective take. Development of these skills begins in the first years of life – well before a child is expected to write a story on paper.

“Based on research, we’ll look at the foundation skills that underpin narrative and different ways to look at story structure. Using video examples, we’ll assess narratives in children using a published measure (the narrative language measure) and identify appropriate goals. We’ll also spend time planning and practising practical activities that support narrative language development.”

This course is taking place on 5 March 2019 at The Elizabeth Foundation’s Family Centre in Cosham, Portsmouth, PO6 3LL.
