Who we are
The Elizabeth Foundation is a registered charity (number 293835).
We help young deaf children learn to listen and talk.
Based in Hampshire, we provide services for families across the UK.
Our mission and strategy
We facilitate early diagnosis for babies and preschool children with all degrees of deafness and provide comprehensive educational and support services for these children and their families. By doing so we enable young deaf children to develop their listening and spoken language skills, as well as build their self-esteem and we give their parents the confidence and knowledge to make informed decisions on behalf of their child.Read More About our Mission and Strategy
We have developed our own unique Multi Sensory Oral Approach to support the development of listening and spoken language skills in children with hearing loss. This approach encourages the development of speech, language and listening by using all of the child’s senses, in a natural, fun, child-centred environment. By encouraging these skills during the crucial preschool years we aim to prepare deaf children for future successes at school and at work.Read More About Our Approach
The Elizabeth Foundation was founded in 1981 by Shirley and David Metherell, whose daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed as profoundly deaf at 22 months. In response to a lack of local services, and inspired by visiting the John Tracey Clinic in Los Angeles, Shirley and David set up The Elizabeth Foundation to support other parents of young children with hearing loss. The charity they established has gone from strength to strength over the ensuing years.Read More About our History
We aim to make a positive impact by enabling our deaf children to develop good listening skills, natural speech, confidence and self-esteem and by giving parents the confidence and knowledge to make informed decisions on behalf of their child. We publish an annual Impact Report showcasing the importance of our work with young deaf children. The report gives an insight into how we are doing in major aspects of our work.Read More About our Impact
